    The Effects of Scenic and Environmental Amenities on Agricultural Land Values

    Ascribing land value solely to productive capacity does not accurately capture the impact environmental amenities provide on western land prices. Agricultural land prices in Wyoming are estimated using a hedonic price model and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) data. These GIS measurements include on-parcel wildlife and fish habitat, viewscape attributes and distance to protected federal lands. A feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) approach is used to address both spatial autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity. The estimation is robust and highly significant. Results indicate that amenities as well as productivity are significant in explaining land values for the sample analyzed.     Sediment budgets for small salinized agricultural catchments in southwest australia and implications for phosphorus transport

    Examples of sediment budgets are needed to document the range of budget types and their controls. Sediment budgets for three small agricultural catchments (7.6 to 15.6 km2 ) in southwestern Australia are dominated by channel and gully erosion, with sheet and rill erosion playing a subor-dinate role. Erosion was increased by clearing naturally swampy valley floors and hillslopes for agriculture and grazing, and episodic intense rainstorms. The proportion of sediment from channel and gully erosion in the sediment budget appears to be determined by the depth of alluvial fills. Dryland salinization caused by clearing native vegetation has connected hillslopes to channels across narrow floodplains, increasing the Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR). Yield and SDR are found to be insensitive to major in-catchment changes of vegetation cover after initial clearing, the ratio of sheet and rill erosion/channel and gully erosion, and sediment storage masses. This supports the idea that yield alone is often a poor indicator of the impact of land use and land management change. Riparian vegetation would reduce sediment yield but not phosphorus yield.     Neutron Stars and Nuclei in the Modified Relativistic Hartree Approximation

    We have examined the properties of neutron-rich matter and finite nuclei in the modified relativistic Hartree approximation for several values of the renormalization scale, μ\mu, around the standard choice of μ\mu equal to the nucleon mass MM. Observed neutron star masses do not effectively constrain the value of μ\mu. However for finite nuclei the value μ/M=0.79\mu/M=0.79, suggested by nuclear matter data, provides a good account of the bulk properties with a sigma mass of about 600 MeV. This value of μ/M\mu/M renders the effective three and four body scalar self-couplings to be zero at 60\% of equilibrium nuclear matter density, rather than in the vacuum.     Rock Bass Learn to Associate Food with a Visual Cue and Remember the Association when Food is Absent

    We explored the foraging ability of rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris) by testing three hypotheses consistent with the predictions of optimal foraging theory: 1) fish can learn to associate food with a visual cue; 2) trained fish will go to a visual cue faster than untrained fish; and 3) over time, without the reinforcement of food, trained fish will exhibit a diminished response to a visual cue. Our results supported each hypothesis. During the first 96 h of testing, 88 to 100% of trained fish went to the visual cue first; 50% of the trained fish went to the visual cue first after 312 h. None of the untrained fish went to the visual cue first. Trained fish went to the visual cue significantly faster (11.0 cm sec-1 ) than untrained (1.6 cm sec-1 ) fish. There were no significant differences in velocity to the visual cue among the times tested for control fish (0.8 to 2.6 cm sec-1 ). However, velocities of experimental fish were significantly higher from 0 to 24 h (16.7 cm sec-1 ) than from 48 to 312 h (6.7 cm sec-1 ), suggesting that they began extinguishing their responses as the time since the last food reward associated with the cue increased. If rock bass use these abilities in their natural habitats, they likely improve their foraging efficiency and, thus, their overall fitness. (No actual Publication Date listed on Report

    Glibenclamide inhibits BK polyomavirus infection in kidney cells through CFTR blockade

    BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a ubiquitous pathogen in the human population that is asymptomatic in healthy individuals, but can be life-threatening in those undergoing kidney transplant. To-date, no vaccines or anti-viral therapies are available to treat human BKPyV infections. New therapeutic strategies are urgently required. In this study, using a rational pharmacological screening regimen of known ion channel modulating compounds, we show that BKPyV requires cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) activity to infect primary renal proximal tubular epithelial cells. Disrupting CFTR function through treatment with the clinically available drug glibenclamide, the CFTR inhibitor CFTR172, or CFTR-silencing, all reduced BKPyV infection. Specifically, time of addition assays and the assessment of the exposure of VP2/VP3 minor capsid proteins indicated a role for CFTR during BKPyV transport to the endoplasmic reticulum, an essential step during the early stages of BKPyV infection. We thus establish CFTR as an important host-factor in the BKPyV life cycle and reveal CFTR modulators as potential anti-BKPyV therapies

    Diversity on Campus: Awareness and Knowledge About Our Newest Federal Holiday

    In late May 2021, Syracuse University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion asked the Syracuse University Libraries to help prepare a reading list about Juneteenth. Library employees, including liaison librarians and members of the Libraries’ Diversity and Inclusion Team, quickly put together a list of resources for each day of the 19-day campus celebration of Juneteenth. We will discuss our working process, lessons learned, and how we might respond to and proactively approach similar requests in the future. We conclude with some reflections on the future of the holiday and protecting it from adulteration now that it has achieved federal recognition
